Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Plan and prepare for maintaining rig safety and emergency procedures
  2. Assist in securing rig for diverse weather conditions, rig moves or emergencies, as directed
  3. Participate in fire drills
  4. Demonstrate safe working procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of assisting in maintaining rig safety and emergency procedures including:

set and pull manual slips

operate manual make-up and break up tongs

assist in operating portable extinguishing equipment

move drills, tools and equipment around drill floor

selects and wears correct protective clothing for the execution of duties and tasks

assists in the risk assessment of a manual handling task

demonstrates correct manual handling technique

works effectively with others to undertake and complete assisting in maintaining rig safety and emergency procedure tasks that meets all the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and systems

makes announcement on the public address system (PA)

activate alarms

participates in safety meeting

demonstrates consistent timely completion of assisting with rig safety and emergency procedure maintenance that safely, effectively and efficiently meet all of the required outcomes on a minimum of one (1) occasion including:

participating in emergency drill and proceeding to muster point

complying with emergency procedures and instruction

donning emergency gear (e.g. fire suit, life jacket)

operating specific pieces of fire fighting, lifesaving and emergency equipment

correctly apply and use the permit to work and lock out procedure

assisting carrying injured person in stretcher


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in applying the assist in maintaining rig safety and emergency procedures through:

applying organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

work health and safety obligations

complying with company and statutory guidelines, procedures and practices

complying with and participating in training for emergency procedures

complying permit to work system

identifying and complying rig emergency procedures as per station drill

fire, emergency and lifesaving equipment appropriate to the incident

bop, gas and fire alarm signals

the location for assigned fire station

location and use of safety equipment, including fire protection and First Aid

types of spillages, including flammable, toxic and pollution, and appropriate responses

types of discharges, including liquids, gases and solids

types of material, including flammable, toxic, corrosive, explosive and radioactive

determining what are normal drilling operations

determining what is non-routine drilling operations

complying with man management/rig management

emergency duties

location of alarm stations
